2D Echo Test in Ahmedabad — Heart Ultrasound at Sheth Heart Clinic, Bopal
A 2D Echocardiogram (2D Echo) is the most comprehensive non-invasive test available for evaluating the structure and function of the heart. It produces real-time images of the heart — its chambers, walls, valves, and pumping function — using safe ultrasound waves, without any radiation or needles.
At Sheth Heart Clinic, Bopal, the 2D Echo is performed with GLS (Global Longitudinal Strain) — an advanced analysis that detects subtle changes in heart muscle function that standard echo alone can miss. All scans are interpreted by Dr. Kulin Sheth, a senior interventional cardiologist.

What Does a 2D Echo Evaluate?
- Heart pumping function — the ejection fraction (EF), which measures the percentage of blood the heart pumps out with each beat. Normal EF is above 55%.
- Heart chamber size — whether chambers are normal, dilated, or thickened
- Heart valves — whether they are opening and closing normally, and whether there is leakage (regurgitation) or narrowing (stenosis)
- Wall motion — whether all parts of the heart muscle are contracting normally, or whether there are areas of weakness suggesting prior damage or reduced blood supply
- Pericardium — the sac around the heart, checking for fluid accumulation (pericardial effusion)
- Congenital abnormalities — structural defects present from birth
What Is GLS — Global Longitudinal Strain?
GLS is an advanced echo technique that measures how much the heart muscle deforms — or squeezes — with each contraction. While a standard echo may show a normal ejection fraction, GLS can detect subtle and early reductions in heart muscle performance that are not yet visible on conventional imaging.
- GLS is particularly valuable for:
- Early detection of chemotherapy-related heart damage (cardio-oncology)
- Detecting subtle dysfunction in patients with diabetes or long-standing high blood pressure
- Monitoring subclinical heart failure — where damage is present but not yet symptomatic
- Evaluating patients with borderline ejection fractions more precisely
Who Needs a 2D Echo?
- Breathlessness — particularly on exertion or when lying flat
- Chest pain or a suspected heart attack
- Heart murmurs detected during a clinical examination
- Known or suspected valve disease
- Long-standing high blood pressure requiring cardiac evaluation
- Diabetes with cardiovascular risk factors
- Swelling in the feet or ankles
- A history of heart failure or reduced heart function
- Patients on chemotherapy requiring cardiac monitoring
- Abnormal ECG or TMT results requiring further evaluation
How Is the Test Performed?
The 2D Echo is painless and non-invasive. You will lie on a couch while a gel is applied to the chest. A transducer — a small handheld probe — is gently moved across the chest to capture images of the heart from multiple angles. The test takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. No fasting is required in most cases.
At Sheth Heart Clinic, the Echo is interpreted by Dr. Kulin Sheth on the same day. The report and findings are explained to the patient before they leave.

FAQs
Is the 2D Echo safe?
Completely. The test uses ultrasound waves — not radiation. It is safe for all patients including pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
How long does it take?
Approximately 20 to 30 minutes. With GLS analysis, interpretation may take a little longer.
Is fasting required?
Generally no. In specific clinical situations, fasting may be advised. Please confirm at the time of booking.
What is the difference between a 2D Echo and an ECG?
An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart. A 2D Echo produces structural images of the heart. Both provide different and complementary information — in most cases, both are performed together for a complete cardiac evaluation.
Will I get the report on the same day?
Yes. Dr. Kulin Sheth interprets the Echo on the same day and reviews the findings with you before you leave the clinic.
